The property and construction industries from 89 nations representing more than 30,000 organisations have united for World Green Building Week, from 19-23 September. The Irish Green Building Council is hosting a series of events as part of the week.
World Green Building Week aims to highlight the important role that green buildings play in improving the global carbon footprint, while also saving money, creating jobs and reducing poverty.
“Ireland needs to grasp the opportunities created by the imperative to transform the built environment across Europe,” said Philip Lee, chairman of the Irish Green Building Council.
"Irish companies that are innovators in sustainable products and services for the built environment are now able to reap the benefits from a growing international market looking for green construction goods and services."
“With the government’s recently published action plan on green public procurement and the commitment of funding to the Better Energy scheme, among other state and semi-state programmes, companies now have reasons to focus on green building, green retrofit, and green facility management,” Mr Lee said.
Buildings consume a third of the world’s resources during the construction process, generate around 40 per cent of global energy use and up to 30 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Buildings also represent the single largest opportunity to mitigate climate change. The United Nations Development Program has stated that “no other sector has such a high potential for drastic emission reductions”, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said that buildings offer some of the most cost-effective and expedient ways to reduce greenhouse emissions.
